About

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) is India’s largest integrated oil and gas company, majority owned by the Government of India under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Established in 1959, the company is engaged across the entire hydrocarbon value chain, including refining, pipeline transportation, marketing of petroleum products, exploration & production of crude oil, natural gas, and petrochemicals. IOCL operates one of the largest refinery networks in India, with a refining capacity of over 80.

55 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) as of 2024, and manages more than 15,000 km of crude oil, product, and gas pipelines—the largest pipeline network in India.

IOCL serves a wide spectrum of sectors through its extensive distribution infrastructure, supplying fuels, lubricants, and petrochemicals to industries and households. The company’s retail presence includes over 36,000 fuel stations nationwide, in addition to LPG bottling plants, aviation fuel stations, and bulk terminals. Indian Oil has significant overseas interests through subsidiaries and joint ventures, supporting its global expansion and energy security objectives.

Business Model & Strategy

Indian Oil Corporation earns revenue primarily through refining crude oil and marketing a wide range of petroleum products, including petrol, diesel, LPG, aviation turbine fuel, lubricants, and petrochemicals. Its extensive network of pipelines ensures efficient transportation of crude oil and finished products, while its fueling stations cater to retail, industrial, and commercial customers. The company also focuses on non-fuel businesses—petrochemicals, natural gas, and alternative energy sources such as biofuels and hydrogen—aligned with its diversification and sustainability strategies.

IOCL's business model emphasizes integration and economies of scale, leveraging digital transformation, supply chain efficiency, and customer-centric innovations such as automated retail outlets, premium fuels, and digital payment solutions. Investments in clean energy initiatives, decarbonization, and collaborations for green hydrogen and electric mobility infrastructure are driving new growth vectors toward long-term energy transition objectives.
